Shumba Safaris was established in the 70' s by the late J.P.Kleinhans snr. and his wife Maggie.

Mel (youngest son) and his 2 brothers grew up under the expert guidance of their father with a tremendous love and passion for nature, animals and conservation.

J.P snr started the first lion breeding program in the eastern cape in 1989 working closely with the Department of Nature Conservation.

However he was tragically killed by his lions in 1995.

Mel took over his reigns sucsessfully continuing the lion breeding program and the ETHICAL hunting of lions until Dec. 2007.

We at Shumba sees this as the end of an era. Mel wants to focus more on other aspects of game farming , tourism and hunting safari's.
